The Chianti region in Tuscany, famous for its wine producing vineyards and rolling hillsides, was first defined in 1716 and encompasses far less territory then it does today. Originally, this historically rich regionwas an area including the villages of Gaiole in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti and Radda in Chianti. In 1932 the map was redrawn to include seven sub-areas: Chianti Classico, Colli Arentini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Colli Senesi, Montalbano and Rufina.
Ever wonder why the Black Rooster is the symbol of Chianti wine? The legend is that around 1100 AD the Sienese and the Florentines were still disputing over the land boundaries and decided that on the roosters morning crow they would each send out a horseman and towards each others towns and where they met the new line would be drawn. While the Sienese chose a plump white rooster for this honour, the crafty Florentines chose a black rooster and gave it so little to eat that on the appointed day it began to crow long before dawn. By the time the horsemen met in the morning, the Florentine horseman was only 19 km away from Siena.
The coastal breezes coming in over the sun-drenched vine covered hillsides provided the perfect conditions for grape growing and the wine mecca of Italy flourished. This charming region of Tuscany is a destination location for wine buffs and food aficionados world wide due to is friendly, beautiful atmosphere, pleasant climates and historical acccommodations. Medieval castles, churches and family run agriturismo farm estates are found through out the region providing romantic settings in which to enjoy this fruitful land.
