The Chianti Classico region was the original called Chianti before it grew into a larger region emcompassing neighboring villages. It is a land of ancient traditions that was civilized in first by the Etruscans, who left many traces of their activity in the wine sector, and then by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the cities of Florence and Siena battled over this region. Villages and monasteries, castles and fortresses appeared during that period and many of them were later transformed into villas and country residences when land disutes died down. It was then that land was cleared in the forests of chestnuts and oaks for the cultivation of vines and olive trees.
Chianti Classico comes from the highly fertile region situated between the cities of Florence and Siena, made unique by the careful use of ancient and modern technologies, which over the centuries have truly added to the natural beauty of the area. The specification "Classico" refers to the most ancient area of production of the Chianti region.
Strict regulations apply to the Chianti Classico appellation to differentiate it from the Chianti wine. Most notably is the requirement to be tasted by an estemmed panel and that a certain percentage of Sangiovese grapes allowed for each appellation: 80% for Chianti Classico vs. the 75% minimum used for Chianti. These high standards are what make the Chianti Classico a highly esteemed wine.
